Bachelor in Law by the Universidade de Lisboa. Completed a post-degree in Environmental Law by the same University and is currently preparing his PhD thesis in International Public Law at the Universidad de Cáceres. Lawyer until 2014, he worked as legal advisor at the Lisbon City Hall from 1992 to 2012. Some of his functions along his term in office were running the City Hall International Relations Office, assisting several Environment aldermen and providing legal advice directly to the Mayor's Office and to the Institutional,  Environmental and Social Departments of the City Hall. From 2007 to 2009 he was President of the National Jurisdiction Council of Partido da Terra - MPT. He served as Secretary-General of that party from 2009 until 2011, date from which he took the role of member of the MPT National Political Council and Electoral Coordinator. 
 
In 2012 he becomes legal and political advisor to the Partido da Terra - MPT political group at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly. In November 2014 he was elected President of the Partido da Terra - MPT, and is Member of the European Parliament since 1 July of that same year. In October 2017, he was elected member of the Municipal Assembly of Lisboa. He is a full  Member of the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Central America and the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.
